Advent in Mariánské Lázně: the Colonnade Christmas Market and a Slower December

A December in no particular hurry

Advent in Mariánské Lázně does not begin in a shopping centre. It begins on the colonnade. The cast-iron arcade of 1888–1889 is lit up, the smell of mulled wine and gingerbread drifts between the wooden stalls, and a Christmas tree stands above the snowy park — the kind people actually stop in front of. The Christmas market in Mariánské Lázně is not a mass attraction; it is the winter continuation of what a spa town does all year round: give you a reason to go outside, walk slowly, and have something worth looking at while you do.

Anyone who knows the great advent markets of Prague, Vienna or Nuremberg will notice the difference within ten minutes. No queues, no crush, no item on the itinerary you must "get through". The markets run at weekends; between them the town returns to its ordinary rhythm of treatments, walks and coffee somewhere warm. That combination is exactly what makes advent one of the most agreeable times to visit.

Advent 2026: the dates worth noting

In 2026 the advent Sundays fall on 29 November, 6 December, 13 December and 20 December, and Christmas Eve — the main Czech celebration, not Christmas Day — is a Thursday. According to the programme published by the town and by the national tourism portal Kudy z nudy, the calendar looks like this:

• Christmas market on the colonnade — on advent weekends, daily from 10:30 to 18:00, on the spa colonnade in front of the Cross Spring pavilion. The dates published for 2026 are 27–29 November, 4–6 December and 18–20 December.
• Ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree — Saturday 28 November at 17:00 on the colonnade, with carols sung by pupils of the F. Chopin Art School.
• St Nicholas celebration — Saturday 5 December from 14:00, with St Nicholas, angels and devils. In Czech tradition Nicholas arrives on the eve of 6 December, and always as a trio — for visitors, a small piece of cultural theatre in its own right.
• Rock carols — Sunday 6 December: familiar Christmas songs in rock arrangements.
• Advent at the Chopin House — 12 to 19 December: a craft market in the courtyard daily from 15:00 to 18:00, and a concert every day from 17:00.
• Winter market on the colonnade — between the holidays, 26–28 December.

One thing is worth knowing in advance: the detailed line-up for each weekend is filled in during the autumn, and the organisers explicitly reserve the right to change it. If you are travelling for one particular performance, check the events calendar on the town's official portal first — market dates tend to be settled early, the names of the bands less so.

What the colonnade market is like

The market is small, and that is its strength. The wooden stalls stand directly beneath the colonnade and around the Cross Spring, so a wander between them doubles as a tour of the finest architecture in town. The goods are mostly handmade: ceramics, natural cosmetics, candles, tree decorations, honey products, mistletoe. Alongside them, mulled wine, punch, gingerbread, trdelník (a sweet rolled pastry baked over coals) and sausages — and live music from a stage, rather than from a loudspeaker in every corner.

The accompanying programme is fond of tradition and of humour in roughly equal measure. Brass bands, folklore ensembles and children's choirs share the schedule with things you would not expect on a spa colonnade, such as the rock carols mentioned above. In the evening, once the tree and the colonnade are lit, the mood changes entirely: fewer people, warm light, and a park under snow.

On the third advent weekend the centre of gravity shifts a short walk away, to the Chopin House. From 12 to 19 December its courtyard becomes a smaller but far cosier Christmas yard — craft stalls, a café, punch, and a concert every day at five. It is precisely the sort of event at which, after half an hour, you stop feeling like a tourist.

Advent at spa pace

The great advantage of advent in a spa town is that the market is not the main programme — it is the bonus. Mornings belong to treatments, afternoons to a walk, early evenings to the colonnade and a cup of mulled wine. December is also one of the quieter months: shorter waits for treatments, calmer pools and wellness areas, and more of the staff's time for each guest. If you have ever considered a winter cure, advent is its most attractive version.

The springs flow all year, regardless of the weather. Their composition and temperature do not change in December, and a drinking cure in a steamy colonnade while snow falls outside has a particular charm. What matters is this: the drinking cure is not self-service. Which spring, how much and for how long is always decided by a spa physician on the basis of your diagnosis. Without that consultation, treat the cup at the spring as part of the atmosphere rather than as treatment.

Accommodation in advent ranges from three-star houses to the five-star Nové Lázně (New Baths), which contains the Roman Baths of 1896. Many spa houses have a spring piped into the building, so that in a frosty week both the drinking cure and the treatments stay under one roof. What to do on weekdays

Between advent weekends the town does not close — it merely slows down. Good options include:

• Walking the promenades and the forest. The Slavkov Forest begins a few hundred metres behind the colonnade, and its winter paths are among the quietest places in Bohemia. Shoes with grip and a head torch are worth packing — it gets dark shortly after four.

An advent weekend, step by step

If you are coming for two days, there is nothing to invent — the town has its own timetable, and all you need to do is join it.

Friday. Arrive in the afternoon, check in, and take a first walk along the main street before the light goes. The market opens on Friday, but the Friday evening is the quietest of the weekend — ideal for a first mulled wine without a queue and for working out which stall is where.

Saturday. A treatment or the pool in the morning, a late breakfast around midday, and the main programme on the colonnade in the afternoon: Saturday has the strongest line-up and the largest crowd. Early evening belongs to the lit colonnade — between five and seven the light is at its best. If you are travelling with children, plan Saturday around the St Nicholas celebration.

Sunday. A longer walk into the park or out to the Forest Spring in the morning, while there is still frost on the paths and nobody about. One last stop at the market before you leave — Sunday afternoon is the emptiest, and the stallholders have time to talk.

If you have three days, add a weekday rather than a second weekend. The difference between the colonnade on a Saturday and the colonnade on a Tuesday is precisely what people come to a spa town for.

Practical tips

When to come. The first and second advent weekends have the fullest programme and the most festive atmosphere. The fourth weekend (18–20 December) is quieter and suits anyone who would rather walk towards Christmas than be swept into it. For complete silence, come midweek.

Shopping over the holidays. Czech law requires shops larger than 200 m² to close on 25 and 26 December, and to stop selling at midday on 24 December. Smaller shops and hotel services are exempt, but a large shop is best done earlier.

What to wear. The town sits 630 metres above sea level and December is markedly colder than in Prague. Snow is not guaranteed, but it is more likely than in the lowlands. Layers, waterproof shoes and a hat will noticeably extend your time at the market.

Getting there. The train from Prague is direct and the station is a few minutes from the spa quarter by trolleybus — the details are in Train to Marienbad. Booking. Advent weekends and the days between the holidays are in demand, while December weekdays are considerably quieter. If you have a particular house or a stay with a treatment programme in mind, it makes sense to arrange it early — not out of urgency, but because the spa houses plan their December schedules well in advance too.

Who advent in Mariánské Lázně suits

Couples who would take two calm days over one frantic afternoon of shopping. Families for whom St Nicholas on the colonnade will mean more than a crowded shopping centre. And above all, anyone who wants festive atmosphere combined with something that outlasts the presents — rest, movement and looking after their health.

Advent here does not last an evening. It lasts four weeks, and between the weekends the town offers its guests exactly the calm it offers for the rest of the year.
