Is prevention more expensive than treatment? Quite the opposite
Imagine travelling to a spa not because something hurts, but because you want to make sure nothing starts to hurt. Does that sound like a luxury? In truth it is one of the most sensible investments in your health you can make: time for yourself, movement, sleep and a doctor who gives you their attention without haste.
Spa towns such as Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad) offer a setting in which prevention is not merely a medical term, but an experience.
What is a preventive spa stay?
Unlike a classic therapeutic cure, where you arrive with a specific diagnosis and a referral from your doctor, a preventive stay focuses on:
- An initial examination — a consultation with the spa physician, a basic examination and, depending on the programme, laboratory tests
- Identifying risks — blood pressure, weight, metabolic markers, movement habits
- Movement and regeneration — treatments and guided exercise that the physician puts together according to your condition
- Lifestyle adjustments — consultations with a doctor, a nutrition adviser and a physiotherapist
In Marienbad, preventive care draws on natural healing resources: the mineral springs, peloid, natural CO₂ gas and the climate, for which the town has held the status of a climatic spa since 2023. Which treatments belong in your programme is decided by the spa physician at the initial examination.
Why a spa — and not an ordinary clinic?
Any outpatient clinic can carry out a preventive check-up. A spa, however, offers something a clinic cannot replace:
Time
Who among us sets aside several days at home purely for ourselves? At the spa it is possible. No e-mails, no obligations. Just you, your body and doctors who give you their unhurried attention.
Setting
Marienbad lies in a sheltered basin of the Slavkov Forest at an altitude of 630 metres. Forest trails begin a few minutes from every hotel, the air is clean and the silence here is true silence.
A complete approach
A preventive stay combines examinations with treatments and movement. You do not go home with results alone, but with a concrete plan that you have already begun to put into practice at the spa.
What a preventive week in Marienbad looks like
The following schedule is an example; your programme is put together by the spa physician after the initial examination.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Initial examination, blood tests | Terrain therapy, drinking cure |
| Tuesday | CO₂ bath, massage | Nutrition consultation |
| Wednesday | Follow-up examination | Peat wrap, sauna |
| Thursday | CO₂ therapy, exercise | Walk through the Slavkov Forest |
| Friday | Final consultation with the physician | Individual wellness programme |
Who is a preventive stay suitable for?
- 40+ — the age at which it pays to monitor blood pressure, weight and metabolic markers regularly
- Sedentary occupations — programmers, managers, drivers
- Family history — diabetes, hypertension or cancer in the family
- Long-term stress — a stay can improve sleep and fatigue, but it does not replace psychotherapy or psychiatric care
- After an illness — convalescence under medical supervision, for example after Covid
If you are being treated for a chronic condition, consult your doctor before booking. Acute infections and fever are among the general contraindications to spa care.
What the studies say about preventive stays
There are fewer studies on preventive stays for healthy people than on the treatment of specific diseases. Those that exist, however, show measurable things:
- Stress, sleep and fatigue. In a Lithuanian randomised trial with 373 adults with high stress levels, spa programmes of just 6–11 days improved fatigue, sleep and quality of life, and the effect lasted 6 months; balneotherapy worked better than a stay in nature alone (Rapolienė et al., 2025, Int J Biometeorol). Among 362 "sub-healthy" adults in China, five months of regular bathing led to fewer sleep disturbances and less psychological stress than in the control group; the study was not randomised and relies on questionnaires (Yang et al., 2018, Int J Biometeorol).
- Habits that last. In a French randomised trial with 228 spa patients, 81% of those who received coaching and an app at the spa were meeting physical activity recommendations a year later, compared with 67% in the control group; the data were self-reported (Fillol et al., 2021, J Med Internet Res).
- Fewer painkillers. In people who already have joint or back pain, randomised trials showed lower analgesic use after a spa cure: in 80 patients with knee osteoarthritis after two weeks of peloids and baths, still evident after 9 months (Fioravanti et al., 2010, Am J Phys Med Rehabil), and in 121 patients with chronic low back pain after 6 months (Constant et al., 1995, J Rheumatol). Both studies were unblinded and from a single centre.

Marienbad and prevention: what is unique
Marienbad has more than 40 mineral springs of varying composition within the town. This makes an individualised drinking cure possible: the spa physician selects the spring, the dose and the time of day according to your health profile.
Natural CO₂ gas from the Maria Spring is used in CO₂ baths and dry gas baths. These are treatments that spa physicians traditionally prescribe for patients with disorders of the circulatory system, and whether they are included in a preventive programme is decided by the physician according to your condition and contraindications.
And climate therapy — medically prescribed forest walks with a defined gradient — is prevention that requires no equipment at all. Just the forest, the air and movement.
When to come and for how long
The best time for a preventive stay is whenever you feel well. That is precisely when prevention makes the most sense.
A preventive stay is not covered by health insurance; you come as a self-paying guest. You therefore choose the length of your stay yourself in consultation with the spa physician, most often 1–3 weeks. Expert correspondence regards 2–3 weeks with 10–21 treatments as the norm for spa treatment (Karagülle and Karagülle, 2021, Int J Biometeorol); shorter stays are regenerative rather than therapeutic in character.
